It's time to get your flu shot. Veterans enrolled in VA health care can get a free flu shot at a VA health care facility.
The Tuscaloosa VAMC will begin flu vaccines for Veterans on October 1, 2017.  We will be adminstering vaccines in building 135 RM G-32 (Specialty Care Clinic), when you enter Building 135 at the AOD desk take a right at the Uniform display.

Flu – short for influenza – is a respiratory illness that spreads easily from person to person.

Flu vaccination is your best protection against the flu, which usually begins in the fall and can continue through late spring. Everyone age 6 months and older should get the vaccine.

Influenza and other viruses have found a fantastic new way to spread: via cellphones, smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices. Germs like to attach onto plastic and similar hard surfaces and linger longer than they would on softer materials. Plus, we hold these devices right up to our faces and take them everywhere.

And we get it, our younger strong Veterans don’t want flu shots…the younger generation feels that since they are young, that they are very tough minded and their bodies will adapt to whatever nature throws at them. But the fact is that an estimated 5 to 20 percent of the US population gets the flu each year. Just because you haven’t been sick with the flu doesn’t mean you won’t get it later – you’re basically rolling the dice each year.

Another reason to get a flu shot is to realize that getting a flu shot isn’t just about you. Perhaps you have already had the flu or you don’t dread being sick in bed for a few days, but there are others who may not have the same strength in immunity that you have.  Unfortunately, pregnant women, young children and older family members face a bigger problem with the flu, some even may consider it to be deadly to them.  Do it for them.

Defeating the Flu is something we take seriously every year. We understand that our Veterans can’t always make it during our clinic hours so we teamed up with Walgreens to be able to help more Veterans receive their benefit.

At no cost to you, you may also visit your local Walgreens and use your VA issued I.D. card to receive your immunization. The best part is that Walgreens will even automatically update your records with us; now that’s community healthcare! It’s easy to get your flu shot from an expertly trained pharmacist at your local Walgreens, and you don’t need an appointment.

Download and print this no cost flu shot form and Walgreens will automactically update your VA Electronic Health Record:  No-Cost Flu Shots for VA patients.
